PEROBA ROSA

Aspidosperma spp.
Aspidosperma spp. of the family Apocynaceae. Peroba rosa is one set of Aspidosperma species and another wood, carreto, is another set of Aspidosperma species. Because they are similar in color and face grain appearance, they cannot always be distinguished by the face grain, but they can always be distinguished by the end grain, as seen directly below. The two sets of species are:

NOTE: this separation based on end grain characteristics of the two groups listed is suspect and under review

I note that the species Aspidosperma polyneuron uses both names.

Typical end grain patterns for the two groups
the top two are each.25" square and the bottom two are each .04" square

Grows in South America, primarily Argentina and Brazil, and is also known as guatambu, guatambu rosa, pink peroba, red peroba, and shibadan, among others. Some form of peroba veneer was used to panel the huge dining room in the Queen Mary and it reportedly has quite a rich look.

planks --- obviously the colors are all over the map on this but I have no idea whether it's because there are numerous species sold under the same name and thus some/all of the variation is real, or if it's a matter of poor color correction, or if it's a matter of mis-identification, or more likely, some combination of the three.
